he beat his fists upon his chest

Today it is wonderfully hot and truly feeling like summer. After breakfast, Man-cub decided he wanted to go on a walk around his neighborhood. Now, I know he lives kind of in the forest, but really. We have to cross the interstate to get to the mountains, meaning any animals have to as well.

While minding our own business standing on the bridge by the neighborhood pond admiring all the little minnows, I was asking him if there were any real fish in the pond and he was explaining how it is stocked with trout and the like. I was about to say "Let's walk around and see if we can find any fish," when suddenly, I realized a bear had beat us to it. That's correct, a bear. Shortly followed by his friend, just going for a swim in the pond.

If you look closely in the white stuff, you can see their heads poking out.
We stood and watched as they swam around and while I was trying to remember if you're supposed to play dead or look really big and exactly how far the random neighborhood house was and if I thought we could really run fast enough to the house before being mauled to death, Man-cub thought it was a good idea to walk just a little bit closer...and closer...and closer. All the while, I stayed on the bridge yelling (in a whisper-ish sort of way) for him to come back. Especially when one of the bears, what looked like the bigger one, climbed out of the pond, shook off, and stood staring at Man-cub just down the path. As I was freaking out on the bridge, I believe Man-cub was beating his fists upon his chest declaring he was man facing the bear.

Luckily, neither of us got mauled and we watched both bears exit the pond and head back up the hill. Shortly after, we decided to start our walk back home, and found them again sitting in the grass along the path. I was starting to feel slightly calmer when suddenly one got up and ran across the path to the other side. I immediately backed up and refused to walk by until both bears were on the same side. Man-cub obliged, though I'm sure unwillingly. We watched as the other bear ran after his little friend across the path.

He's hard to see, but the bear is in the shade.
They were kinda cute, I can't lie. But seeing a bear in the wild with no protection is still slightly nerve wrecking, even if in a subdivision. I guess that's just another day in the wonderful Colorado.

I hope no little dogs were left unattended outside...
