I Got Inked

That's right friends!
I got a tattoo over Christmas break!
It hurt really bad, and I think I like getting my ears pierced more...or just the speed of a piercing. Either way. I committed and love it!

It says grace and is written in Greek. It is under my right ankle bone and I love how artsy he made it look so it wasn't just like font on my foot.

You are probably wondering why I chose the word grace. Honestly, I just like it. The word has so much meaning and so much power. It really is hard to comprehend at times.
Also, sometimes you just need grace to make it through the day. And in the end, His grace is sufficient.

Thank You Sean Plott

This Christmas, I got Man-Cub the best present ever and will never again be able to top it. As you all know, Man-Cub is a little bit nerdy...and has started to turn me a little bit nerdy. He plays many video games and his current favorite is Star Craft 2. Now, if you ask him, he could give you all the details about the game. But all I really know  is there's a lot of clicking, and a map, and you attack each other. I don't really know much about it, obviously.

But it's supposed to be a big deal in the gaming world these days and there are professional players and tournaments and they're trying to get it on ESPN like a real sport...I think you get the point.

When Star Craft 1 came out, this guy named Sean Plott played professionally. He was super good and everybody loved him. When Star Craft 2 came out, Sean decided to quit playing professionally and help other people not only get better, but also learn to love and appreciate the game. Sean's gaming name is Day[9] so in order to help other gamers, he created a show online for others to watch. His website is day9.tv and he does Day[9] daily shows in order to help Star Craft 2 gamers "become a better gamer." Although most of you are not gamers, Day[9] is kind of a big deal in the gaming world. He can have 17,000 live viewers during the daily, then he archives the show and will get hundreds of thousands of more views. He is a big deal.

Man-Cub loves watching the Day[9] Daily and is happy to share the funny moments with me. Although I don't play, nor understand Star Craft, Day[9] has some non-Star Craft episodes so Man-Cub happily shared them with me. In watching the few shows I could, I learned that Day[9] is awesome and super funny and I became a fan. Man-Cub had mentioned wanting a Day[9] t-shirt and considering I loved Day[9], I figured that was something I could support.

In October, I emailed one of the links of Day[9]'s website asking for a signed t-shirt to give to Man-Cub for Christmas. Of course, I made Man-Cub sound as awesome as possible and made sure Day[9] knew how awesome we both thought he was. After waiting a few weeks without hearing anything, I emailed a different address from the website. After waiting a few more weeks, I sent the same email to every address on the site. The Day[9] staff probably got about 8 emails. :) When I never heard anything, I went ahead and just bought a t-shirt offline, a little disappointed about never hearing anything.

On the glorious morning of December 21, I got an email response from a staff member at Day9.tv saying that Sean thought I was awesome and wanted to send a signed shirt. They asked what I wanted the shirt to say, etc. and said they would send a picture of the shirt for me to print out for under the tree until the actual shirt came.

Friends, let me tell you. It's a good thing I didn't hear anything in October. Man-Cub and I were exchanging presents Christmas Eve and I could barely keep it in for those 3 days. I was SO excited and became even more excited when I received this!!

Yes. That is Sean Plott himself. With a note to Man-Cub, specified with terminology for the race Man-Cub plays.

It was awesome.

So having bought a shirt offline and receiving the shirt from Day[9], we obviously had to send a thank you picture to Sean.

So thank you Sean Plott for making our Christmas awesome! :)

Please enjoy the following clip from a Day[9] Daily of Sean laughing at himself laughing. :)

For Snooky

My sophomore year I had to take public speaking. (Horrible) Our last speech was a special occasion themed speech. I figured doing a fake wedding toast would be hard, so instead of a toast, I went for a eulogy. Although he wasn't gone yet, I presented the following for Snooky.

"Remember when you were a little kid and Christmas was the best day of the year? And remember there was always that one present that you seemed to ask for every year and never got? But then one year, your parents would give in and buy it for you and it was the best Christmas ever! Well, it was Christmas morning, the year 1995. My family had opened all of our presents and then my dad snuck downstairs telling my sisters and me to wait for him to come back. From the basement, he brought up a little ball of wrapping paper that had a big red bow on top. He put it between all of us and told us all to be very careful. My oldest sister gently ripped the top open and out popped the tiny little head of our new puppy. Mom and dad had finally caved and bought us the best present ever!
We were all very excited and quickly attempted finding a name for our puppy, but that proved to be harder than expected. I was only four at the time, but I had a green sweatshirt that I loved wearing because it had Snoopy on it, you know, Charlie Brown’s dog. As much as I loved that sweatshirt, I could not for the life of me actually say “SnooPy” and it always came out “SnooKy.” Needless to say, this made for the perfect name for our new puppy. Life would never be the same at our household. Snooky was a good little dog; perfect for three little girls. We grew up with him and we all created individual bonds with him. Although Snooky may have passed, he will always be a part of our lives. In this hard time, I would like to take the chance to remember all that Snooky was to me and share some of the joy he brought to my life; our special bond, his loyalty, and his fight to never give up.

Snooky was a great little dog. The perfect size for three little girls to carry around and play fetch with. He was never very aggressive, and yet, he was always very protective. It was a particularly good thing he was never very aggressive though. Snooky and I had a strong bond from the start. I basically named him because of my lack of ability to pronounce “p” sounds, and by the time my family got him, I was the only one of my sisters and me not going to school yet. My sisters would leave me at home having to play by myself, until Snooky came along. I loved playing with dolls and my stuffed animals when I was little, and unfortunately for him, Snook took the brunt of it. I loved dressing him in my little doll clothes and lining him up with my stuffed animals to read to them.

Somehow, even once I started school, I ended up having many different school transfers, some including a home schooling transition. My sisters never home schooled, but it gave Snooky and I some extra play time. Even in his older years while I was in high school, Snooky would sit with me while I did my school online. He was always one to cuddle and I loved that he would sleep outside my door, even though I was no longer at home.
This is one way in particular that Snooky showed his loyalty to my family. Especially in his last days; my mom would swear that he only kept living because he was waiting for all my sisters to come home. It is hard to imagine from his point of view. Three little girls who played endlessly with him and wore him out every day, and eventually, we all grew up and moved away from home. But Snooky would always be excited when we would come home again. Mom said he was never that excited when it was just her and dad at home. Snook knew us, and we knew he loved us. He may have been a little dog, but he was definitely Clifford on the inside whenever he felt we needed protection. My sisters and I would call him mom’s little spy because if we were still hanging out with our friends, or especially our boyfriends, after everyone went to bed, he would always creep back down stairs and walk around a little bit to stare at us before returning to bed. I guess he just wanted to make sure that any guy we chose was approved by him.
We all built memories with Snooky. We all loved him, just as much as he loved us. It was always comforting to hear the jingle of his collar as he would come trotting to the front door whenever we would get home. It will not be the same now. It started a few years, his little cough. We took him to the vet and they put him on some meds saying he had congestive heart failure. We did not really notice a change once he started the meds and since my sister’s boyfriend’s dad was a vet, we decided to try taking Snooky to him. He quickly changed his meds and said that Snooky would have died within days if he stayed on the meds our first vet gave us. Luckily, Snooky made it through and kept living. It wasn’t until about a year after we really started to notice that Snook was having trouble seeing and hearing. He also developed a little bit of a limp right after getting up after he napped, but he never seemed to really be falling apart. After some regular vet check-ups, we were told that Snooky was not only at the highest, most dangerous level of congestive heart failure, but that he also was going blind, had arthritis and was developing some melanoma spots on his skin. We weren’t really a family that would pay for chemo for our dog, so we just kept giving him his heart meds and said we wouldn’t put him down as long as he was happy.
He would still recognize us, after we got close enough that he could see us, and he still managed to get around the house on his own. We don’t know how he did it, but he fought like no other dog we know. Even our vet said he was something of a miracle. For being such a little dog, he sure didn’t want to miss any of life.
You know, there’s that saying that dog is man’s best friend. Snooky definitely helped my family understand the truth of that statement. He shared the manly bond with my dad as they were the only men in the house and Snooky was left to hold the fort down when dad was away for work. He bonded with mom as she took care of him most diligently and kept her company after we all moved away. And my sisters and I, well, we may have formed different bonds with him, but he still caught all our tears and was there whenever we needed company or someone to talk to. He lived a good long life. From Tennessee to Colorado, road trips all over the country and even some to Canada. He was there for the hard times growing up and made us always feel welcomed home even if we had just left for the grocery store. I am sorry none of you got to meet him, but I am sure he would have been happy to meet all of you. Snooky was a great dog that will never be forgotten, and will always be seen as a part of my family. We will never love a dog as much as we loved him. May he rest in peace."

Part 1 of 3 of 4 AND Part 2 of 3 of 4

Well, this is LONG overdue. It feels as though I'm picking up my journal I promised to write in every day and don't know where to begin filling it in.

Although it is the beginning of spring semester, I will begin with trying to wrap up all of fall semester in some pictures. Fall semester kicked off my Junior year and was my last semester of 18 credits. I am pleased to say that I did way better grade-wise than my last 18 credit semester, and am very grateful to be done with that load. I also confirmed that I am on track to graduate a semester early, so am pleased to say that this time next year, I will be DONE with school!!

So let me try and re-cap some of the major events from this fall.

For starters, Man-Cub turned 21, as stated in my previous post ages ago. We went to the Rio to celebrate and they gave him a free birthday shot! Woo!! (Only 4 months left for me!)

We went tubing down the river in Fort Collins with my roommate and her, now, fiance, and I tore my back all up after being flipped in the rapids. I would probably try it again though...

Man-Cub had crab for the first time. (Which was at Red Lobster in Greeley. Not the freshest, nor by any means the least butter-y, but still an experience.)

We celebrated Halloween together as Lisbeth Salander (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and Spiderman (Spiderman).

My family from Canada visited mom and dad for a weekend so I went home to visit.

UNC kicked off basketball season with a free-to-watch scrimmage/slam-dunk contest so I participated in a school spirit activity. (*cough*Kaylah*cough*)

We had to say good-bye to the best dog ever. (A Snooky specific post to follow)

Mom came and visited for a weekend and we went to see The Help then came home and fried stuff. She really got the college experience when we ended up eating hush-puppies and green beans with fruit salad for dinner at 9pm followed by home-made donuts while playing guitar hero. :) My mom is awesome.

I made some friends doing group projects, one of whom having a cute little 3 pound puppy we got to play with.

Mom had a birthday, so we went to the Lion King off Broadway and Lauren and I got a picture with Rafiki!

Man-Cub and I had some hot dates in Old Town.

And Keifer's dog Chill, who we met over the summer as a tiny puppy, got fixed and learned how to shovel snow every time she went out in her cone of shame.

And that basically wraps up my fall semester. My roommate got engaged right before Thanksgiving, so that has proven to be added stress as she finishes nursing school. Hopefully we can make it through the semester and still be friends at the end!!

Looking towards this spring semester that begins tomorrow, I am a little excited. I am taking some psych classes (abnormal and child and adolescent) that I am excited for and get to take my favorite professor ever for maternal and child nutrition. Hopefully that balances out having to take my least favorite professor ever as well. I made a friend in my psych class from last semester and hope to be able to hang out with her, schedules permitting. Unfortunately, she will graduate in May. But on the bright side, I found a place to live next fall for the six months I will be in school, so will automatically have four other girls to chat with...personalities permitting? I'm starting this semester with the encouragement of knowing this is actually  my last year of school and will fight senior-itis with everything in me!

Good luck to all of you beginning a new year. A day doesn't go by where Facebook doesn't inform me of a new engagement, weekend wedding, or pregnancy announcement. Seems this year will be full of many life changing events...and I will (not so patiently) be waiting for December 15 when I can officially kiss Greeley good-bye!
